The Bombay High Court on Wednesday directed civic bodies to conduct a special operation against illegal hoardings and posters ahead of the upcoming Maharashtra assembly elections. The move was made to prevent public roads from being spoiled by illegal advertisements, which are mainly put up by political parties and socio-religious organizations. The next hearing in this case will be held on November 18.

A division bench of Chief Justice DK Upadhyay and Associate Justice Amit Burkar also reminded the political parties to abide by the undertakings given to the court in the past and assured that none of their workers put up illegal hoardings or posters. The court warned that the violation of the agreements given by parties will be taken seriously.

The court’s guidance is based on an order from 2017, in which civil bodies were instructed to keep public roads free of hoardings and illegal posters. Despite this, the civil body failed to implement this rule, and because of this the court took strict measures.

Advocate Uday Warunjikar, appearing for the Suswarajya Foundation, one of the petitioning NGOs, told the court that in view of the upcoming elections to be held in November, there is a possibility of increased illegal hoardings and posters.

The court said that it is known that political organizations and socio-religious organizations are responsible for most of the hoardings and posters placed on the streets. The bench reminded the political parties of their commitment not to display hoardings, posters and issue circulars to their employees not to engage in illegal acts.

In this context, the High Court instructed the civil authorities to conduct a special trip for a period of one week to ten days, and asked them to take the strictest actions allowed by law against the violators. The police were instructed to provide the necessary cooperation.

The court asked district conferences, sub-officers and other revenue officials to take interest and extend cooperation during the fight against illegal hoardings and posters.
