Tata assured the public earlier on Monday that the hospital stay was part of a routine medical examination related to his age and related health conditions.

Tata became chairman of the Tata Group in 1991. Under his leadership, the company grew into a global business empire worth over $100 billion. In December 2012, he stepped down and was succeeded by Cyrus Mistry, who died in a car accident in 2022.

After retirement, Tata was named chairman emeritus of Tata Sons, Tata Industries, Tata Motors, Tata Steel and Tata Chemicals. He is also on the international advisory boards of Mitsubishi Corporation and JP Morgan Chase and continues to lead the group’s charitable foundations.

During his tenure as chairman, the Tata Group expanded globally, acquiring major companies such as Tetley, Corus and Jaguar Land Rover, transforming Tata from a largely domestic company into a global powerhouse.

Under Tata’s leadership, the group launched the Tata Nano, the world’s cheapest car, and expanded its software services arm, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), into a global IT leader.
