A 40-year-old Calgary man has been charged in connection with an explosion and fire at a northeast townhouse complex that sent six people to hospital over the weekend.

The explosion happened around 11 pm on Saturday, in a townhouse in the 0-100 block of Las Americas Villas Northeast in the Monterey Park neighborhood.

Debris was scattered across a large area around the townhouses, and firefighters arrived at the scene to a significant amount of flame and smoke coming from the complex.

Six people were taken to hospital: one in a life-threatening condition, one in a serious condition and four in a stable condition. Calgary police did not provide an update on the conditions of the injured people on Tuesday.
