Every piece of his collection will go up for sale at Fellows Auctioneers later this month, though, after he announced his retirement.

His shop on Thistle Street has been celebrated locally and internationally with collectors and enthusiasts visiting it for decades.

Mr Bonnar’s knowledge of important gemstones and his role in making antique jewelery fashionable has helped his reputation in the industry.

He has had unique finds including a shoebox full of jets with links to Balmoral, and has been courted by Harper’s Bazaar.

With his retirement now pending, collectors and enthusiasts will have a rare opportunity to acquire pieces from the store’s extensive inventory.

Stephen Whittaker, Managing Director and Auctioneer, said: “We are delighted to be dealing with the sale of such a highly regarded collection. Joseph Bonnar has built an institution in Edinburgh. For decades, he has curated an extensive and impressive collection.

“I feel privileged that we can give jewelery collectors the opportunity to own a piece of this heritage. The collection reflects a lifetime of passion and expertise in the world of jewellery.”
