Guwahati: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Monday, October 7, filed a charge sheet against the main accused, Sanjay Roy, in the rape and murder of a practicing doctor at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, officials said.

The incident sparked widespread outrage and led to a long strike by junior doctors in West Bengal. The accused Sanjay Roy, a civilian volunteer attached to the hospital’s police station, was arrested soon after, following which the case was transferred to the CBI, reports said.
On August 9, the murdered doctor’s body was found inside the seminar room in the RJ Carr emergency building, where she had gone to rest during her night shift.
On Monday, 58 days after the rape-murder, the CBI filed the first charge sheet in the case – a 45-page document submitted to the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate (ACJM) in Salda.
Reports quoting CBI sources said that Roy has been charged with rape and murder. There is no mention of gang rape (in the indictment). Roy is the only defendant who committed the crime. However, the investigation is still ongoing. He was intoxicated at the time of the crime, the indictment stated.
According to it, CCTV footage showed Roy entering the seminar room at around 4am on August 9 and leaving after about 30 minutes. It was also stated in the indictment that the doctor’s body had 16 external injuries and nine internal injuries.
In the same case, on September 14, CBI arrested Sandeep Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar College, and Abhijit Mundol, the then officer-in-charge of the Aries police station, in connection with alleged tampering with evidence and trying to “hush up” the incident.
