A family of seven victims was inside their home in the remote village of Atiasya Songama when the landslide occurred, a senior official said. The whole house was affected by it. They all died after being buried under the debris. Among the dead are three minors.
Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma held a review meeting on the situation in five districts of Garo Hills. He expressed deep grief over the loss of life and property as three persons were confirmed dead in Dalo and seven in Atasiya Sungma. Sangma also ordered an immediate ex-gratia amount to be given to the families of the deceased.
He said the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and SDRF personnel have been deployed to carry out search and rescue operations in the worst-affected areas. Officials said that during the meeting, Sangma suggested using Bailey Bridge technology for rehabilitation efforts so that relief work could be expedited.
