There are 16 railway coach restaurants in operation. Stations will offer unique dining experiences. North East Frontier Railway has opened train coach restaurants at its main stations with the aim of providing passengers with a unique dining environment. These restaurants have been strategically set up in the empty spaces in the circulation area to provide dining opportunities for the rail passengers as well as the public. The North East Frontier Railway has converted some of its decommissioned coaches into restaurants. Railway coach restaurants have gained popularity among passengers and the general public.
Two coach restaurants each at New Jalpaiguri and Katihar stations and one each at Darjeeling, Yogabani, Forbesganj, Siliguri, Purnia and Malda Court stations have been established under Katihar Division. Alipurduar division has one coach restaurant each at Kokrajhar, Rajabhatkhawa and New Cooch Behar stations. Also one each at Guwahati and Lamding stations in Lamding division and one coach restaurant at New Tinsukia station in Tinsukia division.
The coach restaurants are designed with an aesthetic and beautiful traditional look, incorporating a bit of local culture to attract tourists. Passengers can enjoy a quick and tasty meal before or after their journey. Commuters and local residents can also enjoy a train coach dining experience with family and friends.
The restaurant will have food coaches, snacks and drinks available for purchase. The aim of these restaurants is to generate fare-free revenue for the railways as well as catering to the needs of passengers and the public. The effort of the North East Frontier Railway is also expected to create employment for skilled and unskilled workers.
