GUWAHATI: The central government on Thursday approved granting classical language status to five Indian languages, including Assamese, saying the government was taking steps to “preserve their rich heritage”.

Union Minister Ashwini Vishnu told the media, "Today, 5 languages ​​Marathi, Pali, Prakrit, Assamese and Bengali have been approved as classical languages…"

“Until now, we had Tamil, Sanskrit, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam and Odia as the declared classical languages… The government is taking many steps to preserve and promote the classical languages ​​and preserve the rich heritage of these languages…” he added.

It said that in the meantime, proposals were also received from Bihar, Assam and West Bengal for granting the status of classical languages ​​where Marathi, Pali, Prakrit, Assamese and Bengali were approved.
