In the village of Chhapora in Sakti district, about 250 kilometers away from the state capital of Chhattisgarh Raipur, a fraud was committed in the name of SBI, the country’s largest bank, as the villagers mistook the six unknown persons who came to haunt SBI as legitimate employees.

Fake branch started 10 days ago

The fake branch, which was launched just 10 days ago, had all the features of a real SBI bank. New furniture, professional papers and working bank counters. All in all, no one doubts the authenticity of the bank. The villagers, who were still unaware of the ongoing scam, opened bank accounts and started visiting the bank for transactions. Also the newly recruited employees were delighted to get a job in a reputed bank.

Recruiting with fake documents

Then the nearby Dabra branch manager became suspicious and on 27 September expressed doubt. After an investigation, it was confirmed that the bank was fake and a number of employees were employed with fake documents. Senior police and SBI officials were then contacted and complained that the “branch” in Chapora was a fraud and that the recruitment conducted there was fake, said senior police officer Rajesh Patel.

Fake SBI Branch Manager

Four people, including Rekha Sahu, who claimed to be the fake SBI branch manager, and bank officials Mandir Das and Pankaj were identified as being involved in the scam, where the fake branch employed employees with job titles such as manager, marketing officer , a cashier and a computer operator with real looking offer letters. After the recruitment, the fraudster also provided proper training to all, and each employee was paid between ₹ 2 lakh and ₹ 6 lakh and claimed permanent employment.

No branch code list for new branch

A local man named Ajay Kumar Agarwal had applied for an SBI kiosk in Chapora. When he discovered that an SBI branch had suddenly appeared overnight, he became suspicious. They later learned that a new branch could have been opened in Dabra, the nearest legitimate branch, without any warning of this. But later, there was no branch code listed on the signboard with bank employees unable to give satisfactory answers. This raised many suspicions and it is said that Ajay’s suspicion and the subsequent report to the Dabra branch manager led to the unraveling of this complex fraud.

Amisha for employment targeting unemployed youth

A fake SBI branch was set up in a rented complex belonging to Tosh Chandra, a resident of the village. The rent of that place was ₹ 7,000 per month. The fraudster had also arranged appropriate furniture and signage to make the bank look legitimate. Along with that, Amisha Oddi has cheated unemployed youths from different areas including Korba, Balod, Kabirdham and Shakti.

Loan after commissioning

Jyoti Yadav, a fraudulent employee, said, “I submitted my documents, completed biometrics, and they told me that my joining was confirmed and promised me a salary of ₹30,000.” Yogesh Sahu, a local shop owner, said the fake officers had made many people in the village excited about the new branch. But as a result, a number of farmers said they had thought of taking loans after the bank was fully operational.

Salary Rs 30-35,000

Another victim employee Sangeeta Kanwar said that I was asked for Rs 5 lakh, but I told her that I could not pay that much. We finally settled on Rs 2.5 lakhs. Then he promised me a salary of Rs 30-35,000.

Fake bank scam

Another villager Ram Kumar Chandra said that if the fake bank business had continued, many people could have deposited money and cheated crores. Along with this, the unemployed victims face legal difficulties along with financial loss. Many workers who were duped with this, mortgaged jewelery or took out loans to pay for fake appointments are now struggling.
