GUWAHATI: Eight products of Assam have been given Geographical Indications (GI) tags by the GI Registry in Chennai. Of these, three traditional rice beers, four food items and a hand-woven cloth called ‘Arunai’, symbolizing the customs of the Bodo community of Assam, appeared in the list of newly recognized items.

In this view, Ranuj Pegu shared a post on X, formerly Twitter, "Congratulations to Assam and the Bodo community for receiving the Geographical Indications (GI) tags for eight of their traditional products! This recognition, especially for the three rice beers – Bodo Jou Gwran, Maibra Jou Bidwi and Bodo Jou Gishi – along with Bodo Napham, Bodo Ondla and Bodo Narzi, highlights the region’s rich cultural and artistic heritage. A truly proud moment for Assam and the Bodo community!"

The highlight of the GI introductions is three traditional Budo rice beers, which have their own qualities. The first is Bodo Jou Gwran, a strong rice beer with 16.11% alcohol, known for its taste and culture. It represents the cooking traditions preserved throughout the generations of the Bodo community.

Maibra Jou Bidwi was another GI-listed rice beer, commonly served as a welcome drink at Bodo celebrations. Because it was brewed with half-cooked rice and a yeast-like substance called ‘Amoo’, it had a special importance in all the ceremonies and celebrations in which the Bodos participated. Similarly, Jou Gishi, a rice-based alcoholic beverage that has deep historical roots in the social and cultural life of the Bodo community.

In addition to these rice beers, four traditional Budo foods have also received GI tags. These include Bodo Napham – a fermented fish dish – and Bodo Ondla, a rice powder paste curry. Also recognized were Budo Gwaka, a dish associated with the Bwisagu festival, and Budo Narzi, a semi-fermented food prepared from jute leaves, known for its nutritional value.

Furthermore, GI tag has been allotted to Bodo Arunai, an excellent hand-woven piece of cloth bearing intricate designs, signifying the artistry and craftsmanship in the works created by the Bodo tribe. This recognition of these eight products not only preserves the heritage but also takes the cultural heritage of Assam to an international level.
