Does India need a Swachh Bharat Abhiyan?

Cleanliness campaigns like Swachh Bharat Abhiyan are needed to remove dirt and create cleanliness in India. This campaign is important for many good reasons including better health among citizens. As the majority of people in India live in rural areas, there is a need to create more awareness among them. Because, generally people in these areas do not have proper toilet facilities. They go to fields or roads to defecate. This practice creates many sanitary problems for citizens. So, this Swachh Bharat Abhiyan will help in improving the living conditions of these people.

Since the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan started, there have been major changes in the country. An international peer-reviewed scientific journal said the campaign contributed to preventing 60,000-70,000 infant and under-five deaths each year between 2014 and 2020.

The research paper was published in the scientific journal Scientific Reports and the study was conducted by researchers from the International Food Policy Research Institute, the University of California, and Ohio State University. The researchers studied data from nationally representative surveys covering 35 states and union territories in 600 districts over a period of 20 years.

Reduction in infant and child mortality

The study highlighted the link between the increase in access to toilets built under the “Swachh Bharat Mission” and the reduction in infant and under-five mortality between 2000 and 2020. One of the objectives of the campaign is to remove open faeces in villages by providing toilets in every rural home.

About 120 million (12 crore) toilets have been built across rural and urban India in the last nine years, Union Minister Hardeep Puri said.

What did the study say?

The study found that a 10 per cent improvement in toilet access at district level reduced infant mortality by 0.9 points and among children under five by 1.1 points.

Historically, access to toilets and child mortality have had an inverse relationship in India, the study authors said. The authors note that the broad benefits of increased toilet access include improved safety for women, economic savings from lower medical costs, and overall improvements in quality of life.
