The Glen Mhor, which employs 146 workers, was the only business in the UK to win an award at the event, thanks to an £8 million Energy Center and for ‘setting the benchmark’ for sustainability.

The Highland Hotel, which also includes Uil-bheist Distillery and Brewery, received a special commendation award in the World Leading Sustainable Energy Efficiency Initiative category.

It was also shortlisted in the Sustainable Water Innovation and World Waste Innovation and World Leading Sustainable Employer categories.

The judges said the accolade recognized how the Glen Mhor was leading the way towards a net positive future for the travel industry by embedding sustainability across all its operations.

The business behind the hotel is known for developing a ‘first of its kind’ Hydro Solutions Center in 2021 which harnesses the River Ness.

It has also developed an ambitious Climate Action Plan and established Fair Work and inclusion policies.

Co-Owner and Director of Sustainability, Victoria Erasmus, was present at the ceremony to collect the award, explaining Glen Mhor’s operational vision to fellow attendees in San Ignacio.

The winners were given guided insights into the Inca Trails and Mayan culture while learning how the travel and hospitality sectors were adapting towards ambitious climate change mitigation targets.

Ms Erasmus said: “The judges and the hosts were impressed by the way sustainability was embedded in what we do, across the business, and the scale of that; how committed we have been to transforming the business around sustainability, Fair Work and inclusion.

“It was a real honor to represent a family business amongst some of the leading names in hospitality in the world, as well as representing Scotland and the UK.

“Personally, it was an amazing learning experience, from a CPD perspective, and there is so much to come back from.

“Some of the initiatives taking place around the world are truly remarkable and I am even more determined, now, to use that experience to adapt our own climate action plan and to take that to’ the next level.”

The adoption of Solar PV solutions further reduces the reliance on fossil fuels, with the business aiming to be completely gas-free by the end of this year.

Justin Cooke, Executive Vice President, World Sustainable Travel and Hospitality Awards, said: “Congratulations to the Glen Mhor Hotel and Uile Distillery and Brewery on a ‘World Leading Sustainable Energy Efficiency Initiative 2024’ Special Commendation.

“This remarkable achievement reflects how the company is setting the benchmark in sustainable practices and leading the way in creating a net positive future for the travel industry. The commitment and vision of the whole team is an inspiration to us all.”
