GUWAHATI: The annular solar eclipse, or ‘Ring of Fire’, will take place on Wednesday, October 2. The phenomenon occurs when the moon appears smaller than the sun; Thus, it will create a glowing ring of sunlight around its shadowy center.

This major eclipse will last for more than six hours, starting at 9:13 PM IST and lasting till 3:17 AM IST, depriving Indian viewers of the spectacle; As a result, they will also miss the traditional ceremonies known as Sutak Kaal.

The solar eclipse can be seen over parts of the Pacific Ocean, southern Chile and southern Argentina. Here, viewers will witness an event that no one sees twice in their lifetime – the moon partially obscures the sun, turning it into a spectacular crescent before the phenomenon enters the famous “Ring of Fire”.".

NASA says this occurs when the Moon, at its furthest from Earth, passes between the Sun and our planet. Because the Moon is too far away, it does not completely cover the Sun and thus brings a bright, fiery glow around the Moon’s shadow.

The eclipse will begin in phases, beginning with a partial eclipse at 11:42 a.m. EDT over the South Pacific. The main event – the annular eclipse – will begin at 12:50 PM EDT, and will finish its path over the South Atlantic Ocean at 4:39 PM EDT. By 5:47 PM EDT, the entire eclipse including partial phases will be over.
