Today, a hearing was once again held in the Bombay High Court regarding the controversial film Emergency. The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has told the court that actress-producer Kangana Ranaut has agreed to a cut proposed by the censor board in her film Emergency.

When did the film get involved in controversies?

In fact, ‘Emergency’ became mired in controversy when Sikh organisations, including the Shiromani Akali Dal, opposed its release, claiming it misrepresented the community and misrepresented historical facts. The film’s co-producer Zee Entertainment Enterprises filed a petition in the Bombay High Court seeking a direction to the CBFC to issue a clearance to the film.

This is the case

It is worth noting that Kangana Ranaut directed, produced and acted in this film, in which she played the lead role of the late Indira Gandhi. Earlier he accused the Censor Board of denying the clearance to delay the film’s release. Earlier this movie was supposed to release on 6th September.

Several media reports say that the Censor Board’s revision committee ordered 13 cuts in the film and issued it a U/A certificate. These reportedly include adding a disclaimer, removing some dialogue and scenes, and providing facts to support historical references in the film.

Now what did company Zee say?

A division bench of Justice BP Colabawala and Justice Firdosh Pooniwala on Monday heard the petition filed by the film’s production partner Zee Entertainment Enterprises. Sharan Jagtiani, the lawyer for the production company Zee Entertainment, told the court that Kangana Ranaut had informed him that she agreed with the changes suggested by the committee. This means he is willing to make changes in the film.

He said that an agreement has been reached between Kangana and CBFC in this regard and it is being discussed. However, Zee Entertainment needs time to confirm about the cuts. Ranaut’s Manikarnika Films is co-producing the film.

CBFC Advocate Argument
At the same time, CBFC lawyer Abhinav Chandrachud told the bench that the cut will not affect the length of the film. There is not even a minute cut. He said Manikrama Films agreed to most of the changes.

The court said that the next hearing in the case will be held on October 3. Until then both parties should receive appropriate instructions. Zee Entertainment claimed in its petition that CBFC has already given approval to the film but it is not releasing it.

The petition alleged that the certificate was withheld for political reasons and the upcoming elections in Haryana. The bench then wondered why the ruling party would take action against Ranaut, who is herself a BJP MP.

...a certificate will be issued

Last Thursday, the CBFC told the Bombay High Court that the film would get a certificate if some cuts were made to the film, as suggested by its revision committee. CBFC lawyer Abhinav Chandrachud said, “The commission has suggested making some cuts before the certificate is issued and the film can be released.” The film crew asked for time to decide whether to continue with the cuts or not. The bench fixed the next hearing in the case on September 30. Now during the discussion that took place today, the filmmakers agreed to make changes.
