Question – What are a passenger’s rights if the train is late or cancelled?

answer- According to Indian Railways rules, if the train is late due to any reason, the Railways will notify you by sending a message on your mobile phone. In this message, you will be told how many hours the train will be late and when it will arrive at your station. In addition, information about the rescheduling or cancellation of the train will also be given to the passengers. However, this information is only given to passengers with reserved seats.

If the train is delayed for more than 3 hours then the passenger can claim a refund. Understand this from the graphic below.

Question – How will I get a refund on ticket cancellation?

answer- If the passenger has purchased the ticket by paying cash from the railway station ticket counter, then after cancellation, he will get an immediate refund of the cash. If the ticket has been booked online through the IRCTC website or app, then a Ticket Deposit Receipt (TDR) will have to be filed. After this the refund can take around 90 days.

Apart from this, if the train is canceled by Indian Railways then passengers will automatically get a full refund. An e-ticket refund will arrive in your bank account within 3 to 7 days.

Question – Once the chart is prepared, can the ticket be canceled and a refund taken?

answer- Once the chart has been prepared, you cannot cancel your confirmed ticket or take a refund. But even in this situation you’ve got a facility. You can submit a Ticket Deposit Receipt (TDR) with a valid reason for ticket cancellation. Whether they give you a refund or not is entirely up to the Zonal Railway Division officer.

Question – What are the rules for passengers in case the flight is delayed or cancelled?

answer- The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has given certain rights to passengers traveling on flights. Passengers can use these rights in case of flight delays or cancellations.

According to DGCA, if a passenger has arrived at the airport and their flight is delayed for more than 4 hours, then the airline will provide free refreshments to the passenger. If the flight is delayed for more than 6 hours, the airlines will have to arrange another flight for the passenger or give a full refund of the ticket.

Likewise, if the airline cancels the flight, the same conditions will apply. Either another flight will have to be arranged or the full amount of the ticket will have to be refunded. If the airlines do not notify the passengers of the cancellation at least 24 hours before the scheduled departure time, then they will have to pay compensation along with a full refund. This compensation amount can be Rs 5000, Rs 7500 or Rs 10000. This is decided depending on the length of the flight.

Question – When can airlines refuse to pay compensation?

answer- When flights are delayed or canceled due to reasons beyond the control of the airlines, such as political disputes, natural disasters, civil wars, air strikes. In addition, the airlines are not liable to pay any compensation if the flight is canceled due to safety risk or meteorological conditions.

Question: When is a canceled flight ticket refund available?

answer- According to DGCA, if the ticket payment has been made in cash, the airlines will refund the payment immediately. In the case of card payment, the airlines will have to return the payment within 7 days. Even if the ticket is purchased through a travel agent or any third party website, the airlines will still be responsible for a refund. However, in this case you may have to wait up to 30 days for the refund.
