Charles and the Queen will attend and meet Prime Minister John Swinney and other party leaders before the King’s speech in the chamber.

They will then meet people from across Scotland who have been nominated by MSPs as “local heroes” for their extraordinary contribution to their communities at a parliamentary reception.

The event began with the Crown of Scotland arriving at the Scottish Parliament with an escort and guard of honor formed by members of youth organisations.

The president will open the meeting of parliament and formally welcome the King and Queen

His Majesty will respond to the president’s comments and address the Scottish Parliament.

The prime minister and opposition leaders are expected to make short speeches, interspersed between Scottish cultural performances.

However, the presence of King Charles has not been welcomed by everyone, including deputy Green Leader Patrick Harvie among them.

He posted a photo of protesters outside parliament waiting for the king to arrive with signs saying, ‘not my king’.

He added: “Great to see people gathered outside the Scottish Parliament for the 25th anniversary celebrations, with a special welcome to some of our guests today.”
