Guwahati: The Guwahati High Court recently directed the Assam Director General of Police (DGP) to investigate the whereabouts of 1,995 grams of heroin recovered during a major drug bust in Karbi Anglong in May 2022. It later emerged that the IO was not aware of where the drugs were caught

The case begins on May 8, 2022, when law enforcement officers near Anglong intercepted a vehicle and confiscated 152 boxes of suspected heroin. Two people were arrested and convicted in July 2023, each receiving ten years in prison.

However, after hearing the arguments of both sides, procedural deficiencies emerged, namely that of not taking into account the perceived sabotage. Justice Arun Dev Chowdhury, presiding over the case, said the court did not receive or report the drugs, in violation of fundamental provisions of the Narcotic and Psychotropic Drugs (NDPS) Act. As a result, she overturned the conviction, raising very valid questions about the investigation.

These high-profile drugs and others have put the DGP into a more selective probe into the entire case, revealing several glaring loopholes and once again putting a dark cloud over Assam’s handling of drug-related crimes.
