After the incident of the statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj falling in Sindhudurg, Maharashtra, the state government has floated a tender to build a new 60 feet statue there. The size of the new statue will be twice the size of the old statue. The statue will be built at a cost of 20 million rupees. The Maharashtra government has set a deadline of six months to complete the work. On August 26, the 35 feet tall statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj collapsed.
The statue was unveiled last year on the occasion of Navy Day. After this incident, Chetan Patil, the structural consultant of the Shivaji Maharaj statue, was arrested from Kolhapur. A team of local crime branch along with Kolhapur police conducted an operation and arrested Chetan Patil. Sculptor-contractor Jaideep Apte was arrested in this case.
The Maharashtra government had to face criticism regarding the incident of the statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj falling. The opposition parties accused the state government of making the decision negligently. The Maharashtra Public Works Department (PWD) expressed concern over the formation of rust on the Shivaji Maharaj statue and suggested measures to prevent it in a letter sent to a naval officer just six days before the structure’s collapse.
Prime Minister Ekanth Shinde said the statue was designed and built by the Indian Navy. He claimed that the wind was blowing at a speed of 45 kmph when the statue fell. A PWD official said that a tender has been issued for the construction of the new statue and its height will be 60 feet. He further said, “The cost of creating this statue will be 20 lakhs, which includes the engineering, installation and its maintenance.
