The Tobacco Control Act (COTPA) was enacted by the Government of India in 2003 to ban the consumption and promotion of tobacco. According to this law, tobacco consumption is prohibited in public places, including in tobacco-free premises, but its violation may result in a fine. The main goal of this campaign is to increase awareness of the harmful effects of tobacco and motivate people to stay away from tobacco.
District Non Communicable Diseases Officer Dr. Bhupendra Kumar said this to the media while imposing the fine at Sadar Hospital. He also said that during the visits of the SEEDS team to various wards and premises of the hospital, many people were observed consuming tobacco in public places and offices.
The staff took immediate action and arrested such people and informed them of the seriousness of the act. Along with this, he was also imposed a fixed fine. The procedure for imposing the fines is done with complete transparency in order to ensure that those who violate the rules are punished. During this campaign, the SEEDS team provided information regarding the health effects of tobacco consumption, such as cancer, heart disease and other serious diseases.
Apart from that, he also told people about different resources and support groups for quitting tobacco. The team emphasized that tobacco not only affects the health of the individual, but also negatively affects the family and society.
