A dedicated task force will be set up in Odisha to investigate and prosecute cases of child pornography. The government announced on Monday that it will implement the Supreme Court ruling that viewing and downloading child pornography can be an offense under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses Act, 2012. The government also appealed to people to report any suspicious activity for the safety of vulnerable children.

The Odisha government issued a statement saying that the state reaffirms its commitment to maintaining a strict legal framework aimed at preventing sexual exploitation of children in all its forms. He said, ‘The state will increase coordination with law enforcement agencies to effectively deal with the distribution and consumption of child pornography. This includes the establishment of dedicated task forces for the investigation and prosecution of crimes of this type.’

A statement issued by the Odisha government said the landmark judgment sends a powerful message that the state will not tolerate any form of child sexual exploitation. This reinforces the responsibility of every citizen to protect our children, to ensure their safety and well-being.

The announcement stated that in accordance with the recommendations of the Supreme Court, the state will invest in comprehensive support services for victims of child abuse, while providing the treatment and resources necessary for recovery.

In a pioneering judgment, the Supreme Court said that possession of child pornographic material will be considered an offense under the POCSO and IT Acts, even if it is not distributed further.
