GUWAHATI: India has reported its first case of another clade 1b strain of Mpox. The patient is a man from Malappuram in Kerala. He returned to India from United Arab Emirates. Officials said Monday that the patient tested positive for clade 1b last week.

Earlier this month, a 26-year-old man in Haryana’s Hisar tested positive for Clade 2 from West Africa, another variant of the virus.

India has reported at least 32 cases and one death of mpox since the infection was first identified in the country in 2022.

Clade 1b has raised concerns about the infection because it is a more deadly strain, which is reported from parts of Congo and its neighboring countries that have so far not recorded infections. It also became sexually transmitted, which had not previously been implicated in clade 1 infections.

Mpox, formerly known as Monkeypox, is an independent or self-limiting viral infection attributed to the MPXV virus (MPXV). The most common symptoms of mpox are a high-grade fever with headaches, muscle aches, backaches, low energy, and swollen lymph nodes, in addition to a chickenpox-like rash that lasts two to three weeks. It is a self-limiting but fatal disease, especially among children and other vulnerable people.
