Acute water shortage in Islamabad, CDA plans to build two new dams Authority (CDA) is currently supplying only 70 to 80 million gallons per day, leaving a significant gap in meeting the needs of the city.

Despite having three dams, Smiley Dam, Rawal and Khanpur Dam and 201 tubewells, CDA has not been able to meet the shortage of water supply in response to the crisis, CDA has launched two new dam projects – Shahdara Dam and Chiniot Dam announcing projects expected to be completed in the next four years.

It is estimated that these dams provide 18 to 21 million gallons of additional water per day, which will help alleviate shortages, especially in urban areas and some rural areas have confirmed that the Shahdara Dam will provide six to seven million gallons of water per day. In comparison, the Chiniot Dam will contribute 12 to 14 million gallons per day.

He also noted that the project schedule will be clear once the pre-feasibility studies are completed under the guidance of consultants and WAPDA will be deployed, which will provide some short-term relief to the city’s residents.
