Question – What is fake customer care fraud? answer- Fake customer care fraud is a type of scam, which cyber fraudsters usually carry out in two ways.

By entering a fake customer care number on Google Cyber thugs create fake customer care numbers and post them on Google or other search engines, which look similar to the company’s genuine customer care number. When someone calls these numbers, cyber thugs represent customer care and send them a link or ask for information related to their bank account.

By calling as a customer care representative Scammers call claiming to be a customer care representative of a legitimate company such as a bank, SIM operator, electricity department or OTT platform. People are tricked into thinking there is a technical problem with their account or that the service will end soon. Scammers send a link to continue the services, where they install malware on the user’s phone and steal the user’s personal information.

Question- How do cyber thugs catch people in this scam? answer- Cyber fraudsters usually speak in official language like customer care to gain people’s trust. Apart from this, the company’s reference number, caller ID or email are manipulated, and because of that not everyone can easily identify it. In the name of identity verification, cyber thieves send an APK (Android Application Package) link to the user or trick them into asking for financial or personal information.

Question – How can you identify fake customer care numbers? answer- Cyber expert Rahul Mishra says that in case of any service related issue, people need to contact the company or bank. In such a situation, people search on Google first to get the helpline number, but Google never guarantees the authenticity of the number. It shows only the searched data.

Most of the customer numbers that appear on Google pages are fraud because Google pages are easily edited. So, never trust the customer care number given on Google. Always cross-check that number with the company’s website.

Question – How can someone identify a strange or unusual customer number? answer- Rahul Mishra explains that numbers starting with 1800 are generally toll-free numbers in India, given to companies, organizations or government agencies. These numbers enable customers to make free calls.

While odd or unusual numbers start with +92, +93 or any other code instead of +91. The prefix of the number can be something else instead of 011.

However, numbers starting with 1800 can also be fraudulent, as cyber thugs can also obtain such numbers by registering in the name of a business.

These numbers are written in the right-left corner of the website or at the bottom there are options like Contact Us, Helpline or Support, by clicking on which you can get the company’s customer care number.
