Guwahati: Renowned climate activist and engineer Sonam Wangchuk, along with 75 volunteers, embarked on a ‘padyatra’ (foot walk) from Mela to Delhi on September 1. They are demanding the statehood of Ladakh and its inclusion under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution.

Gandhi Jayanti, which is set to end on October 2, will see Wangchuk and his team arrive in Delhi to present their proposal directly to the government. Wangchuk emphasized that constitutional protections are essential for the sustainable development of the region for future generations.

This ‘Padyatra’ is supported by Leh Apex Body (LAB) and Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA). Apart from statehood and inclusion under the Sixth Plan, they also want the establishment of a Public Service Commission, and the creation of separate Lok Sabha constituencies for Leh and Kargil.

The march gained a lot of momentum, and drew closeness from various social groups, including retired soldiers, women and senior citizens. Former Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satya Pal Malik also announced his intention to join the march in October.

The Sixth Schedule, designed to safeguard tribal rights, would provide legislative powers to Ladakh’s local leaders, allowing them to protect the region’s interests from outside pressures.

Despite Wangchuk’s earlier appeals and a memorandum submitted to Prime Minister Narendra Modi in July, the central government has yet to respond.
