NEW DELHI: Union Minister for Roads, Transport and Highways Nithin Gadkari has made an important statement regarding toll tax.

In a podcast with independent journalist Shubhankar Mishra, when asked whether the toll imposed today has affected every middle class, Union Minister for Roads, Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari responded by saying, ‘We are taking the toll from the rich’.

According to Nitin Gadkari, ‘A toll is given where there is economic growth, now the growth rate is high, but the per capita income is high and the number of vehicles is also high, there is a toll. Andhra Pradesh toll collects more money in Karnataka, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Delhi, Punjab and Haryana. But not so much from UP-Bihar, Jharkhand and Northeast.

Further, Nitin Gadkari said, “The toll tax amount goes to the Union Finance Ministry. Then the ministry will increase the same amount for us,” he said. Giving an example, the Union Minister said that it used to take nine hours to travel from Mumbai to Pune, but now it takes two hours. Now there are seven hours of time and fuel left, he said.
