The teams of Marshall and Daya Ram Sahni, two experts from the Department of Archaeology, have played an important role in investigating this civilization. Daya Ram Sawhney first excavated Harappa in 1921-22, finding seals, painted pottery and beads.
With him, Rakhal Das Banerjee began excavating Mohenjo-Daro in present-day Pakistan in 1922 and discovered seals, pottery, copper products and crucibles at the site.
An extensive civilization called the Harappan Civilization
The Harappan civilization can be divided into an early period (from 3200 to 2600 BC), a mature period (from 2600 to 1900 BC) and a late period (from 1900 to 1500 BC).

Mohenjo-daro, Harappa, Ganveriwala Rakhigarhi and Dholavira are the five largest sites in the civilization area spread over 1.5 million square km.
