The Assam government launched the third edition of its flagship poverty alleviation program ‘Orunodoi 3.0’ on Thursday, September 19, extending its reach to 37.2 lakh beneficiaries.

This marks an increase of 12.5 lakh new beneficiaries compared to the previous edition, making it the largest direct benefit transfer (DBT) government initiative in Assam.

"Today is a historic day as we expand this program," Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma posted one such video on X. “Orunodoi 3.0 features over 12 lakh more women”.

The Prime Minister inaugurated the distribution of Orunodoi cards to new beneficiaries during a program in Guwahati. Under ‘Orunodoi 3.0’, women from low-income families will receive a monthly salary of 1,250 rupees, which the government will deposit directly into their bank accounts on the 10th of every month.

The district administration also plans to carefully select new beneficiaries, making sure that eligible recipients from previous editions are excluded unless they no longer meet the updated criteria.

The Orunodoi program was first launched on December 1, 2020, as it aims to empower women by providing financial assistance to poor households. A second edition appeared on December 14, 2022, to expand the number of beneficiaries.

With Orunodoi 3.0, the Government of Assam aims to further alleviate poverty by covering financial security to the majority of women across the state.
