Who are the pirates of Somalia?
According to the American media New York Times, there is no government in many coastal areas of Somalia. People do whatever they want. This encourages pirates and smugglers.

Somalia is a country with a large number of fish in its sea. Until 1990, its economy depended solely on fish. There was no fear of pirates here then. Most of the people traded fish. Then a civil war started here. The government and the navy are no more. Foreign companies took advantage of this.

Somali people used to fish in small boats. Large trailers from foreign companies came and stood in front of them. People started losing their jobs. Troubled by this, after 1990 the people of this country took up arms and became pirates. A large fleet of maritime cargo ships passed through the coast of Somalia.

Fishermen turned pirates began targeting these ships. They started taking ransom in exchange for leaving the ship. By 2005, this business had become so big that a pirate stock exchange was created. That means people could invest in the thieves to fund their operations. In return, people would get a large share of the looted money.

Pirates have also attacked ships with Indian crew.
Pirates have also attacked ships with Indian crew members 5 times so far. On January 4, the Indian Navy rescued a ship from pirates. This Liberian flagged ship was named the Leela Norfolk. The Indian Navy had said that the ship had sent a message to the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) portal. It was said that 5-6 pirates landed on the ship with weapons.

As soon as information was received about the hijacking, a P8I Maritime Patrol Aircraft was dispatched towards the ship. INS Chennai was also sent to protect the merchant ship. The naval operation was completed on 5 January. During this period, all 21 crew members including 15 Indians were safely evacuated.
