The NDA has nominated BJP MP Om Birla as its candidate, while the opposition has fielded veteran Congress leader K Suresh. The election is scheduled for 11 a.m. on Wednesday, June 26. Historically, all previous speakers in the Lok Sabha were elected unanimously.

Since independence, the Lok Sabha Speaker and Deputy Speaker have been elected by consensus between the ruling party and the opposition.

BJP MP Om Birla, the NDA candidate for the post of Speaker of the 18th Lok Sabha, filed his nomination at 11:30 am today, June 25. Birla served as Speaker of Modi 2.0 from 2019 to 2024.

Birla’s name was unanimously decided by all the NDA parties and senior BJP leader Rajnath Singh also reached out to the opposition for their support.

In the past, sources said that the Deputy Speaker’s post could go to the Opposition if a consensus is reached on the NDA’s candidate for Lok Sabha Speaker.

Furthermore, the BJP appointed AIADMK’s M Thambi Durai as its vice-chairman in 2014. The post has been vacant since 2019.

Congress MP Rahul Gandhi said party president Mallikarjun Kharge had received a call from Rajnath Singh to extend support to the NDA candidate.
The Raberley MP said that according to the charter, the position of deputy speaker should be given to the opposition. "Rajnath Singh called Mallikarjun Kharj, and he asked him to extend support to the Speaker. The entire opposition said they would support the chairman, but the agreement is that the position of deputy chairman should be given to the opposition. Rajnath Singh said he would call Mallikarjun Kharj back, but he hasn’t yet," Rahul Gandhi said.

The Speaker of the Lok Sabha will be elected on Wednesday, June 26. On June 27, President Muramu is scheduled to address a joint session of both houses of Parliament. The NDA, which has 293 MPs in the 543-member Lok Sabha, enjoys a clear majority , where the opposition India Bloc has 234 MPs.
