GUWAHATI: David Warner’s illustrious 15-year international career came to an end as Afghanistan defeated Bangladesh in St Vincent’s on Monday night, resulting in Australia’s elimination from the T20 World Cup at the Super Eight stage. It marked a low-key finish for Warner, who walked off the pitch in St Lucia unsure his time in an Australian shirt was over.

Warner’s retirement was a phased process: he played his last ODI during the World Cup final win over India in November, and his last Test match against Pakistan in January. He has long indicated that this T20 World Cup will be his last tournament. Although he left open the possibility of a return to the Champions League next year, it remains an unlikely prospect.

His last performance, against India, was underwhelming: he scored six off six balls before leading a delivery from Arshdeep Singh to slip where Suryakumar Yadav took a low catch. Frustrated, Warner hit his bat with his right hand and walked off the field with his head bowed. Not knowing if this would be his last game, there was no honor guard or applause to mark the occasion.

After the match, he was photographed chatting with Virat Kohli in the off-field at the Darren Sammy Cricket Ground and Josh Hazlewood said the timing of Warner’s exclusion from his team-mates would depend on the outcome of Afghanistan’s late match against Bangladesh.

Ponting, of course, went through this process almost a decade back. “We know he retired from Test cricket in the summer, but you’d be hard-pressed to find a guy who has had as much of an impact across all three forms of Australian cricket as David Warner has."

“I was able to play with him, I was able to coach him in the IPL for the last two years and I really enjoy his company. So he should be very proud of what he has done.”

It’s back to the drawing board for the Green and Gold now, who are moving into a new reality without Warner. “We will definitely miss him around the team, on and off the field,” bowler Josh Hazelwood said after the team’s loss to India.
