Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s green hydrogen mission is gaining momentum. Today, green hydrogen production has begun in many areas of the country, but due to its flammability and high cost, people are reluctant to use it. IT Bhilai has

.

Experimental success has been achieved using 15 percent green hydrogen by mixing it with CNG (compressed natural gas). Preparations are now being made to use it on a large scale. Dr Sanjeev Banerjee, Associate Professor of IIT Bhilai’s Department of Chemistry, said CNG is common in other states including Madhya Pradesh.

CNG stations are opened at Durg, Raipur, Bilaspur, Korba. CNG is less flammable than hydrogen, so 85 percent CNG can be mixed with 15 percent hydrogen for use in vehicles and industries. Gradually its amount can be increased. When driving on CNG, its mileage is higher compared to petrol. By adding hydrogen to it, the mileage can increase by 20 to 25 km.

This mixture will be cheaper or equal to gasoline. From a security point of view it would not be considered dangerous. Although the goal of the green hydrogen mission is set for 2030, mixing the two gases would allow it to be achieved much earlier.

IIT Director Professor Rajeev Prakash said that industrialists will be told the methods of using green hydrogen and its benefits so that they can use it without any fear. They will be told that the fuel of the future is now hydrogen. It is expected that it will soon be used on a large scale in industries.

An effort to make hydrogen cheaper

It will be in such a way that it can produce hydrogen in the car itself in the form of a fuel cell. At the same time, small and large units can be produced and installed in factories as needed. Hydrogen is currently 300 rupees per kg, which means three times more expensive than petrol.

The IIT team is conducting new experiments in the coming days due to which the price of green hydrogen can reach 100-150 rupees per kg. A car will run much more kilometers on half a liter of hydrogen than on one liter of petrol. The Modi government’s National Green Hydrogen Mission aims to produce 5 million tonnes until 2030.

First they will provide cylinders, then the electrolyzer itself will produce hydrogen.

Banerjee said that the first hydrogen energy will be used along with CNG in cars and other vehicles powered by CNG. When its use increases, an electrolyzer (device for producing hydrogen energy) will become available in vehicles and industries, through which hydrogen energy can be produced by breaking down water in the vehicles themselves. Similarly, industries will also produce and use hydrogen themselves.

An experiment for several months: adding hydrogen increased the efficiency of the engine

IIT experts used it in car engines in the lab. In the first engine, a very small amount of hydrogen was added along with CNG. Gradually, its amount was increased to 15 percent. This experiment lasted several months. In the test with the help of equipment, no danger was found. In fact, after adding hydrogen, the performance of the engine increases significantly. According to experts, 50-50 CNG and hydrogen can be used in the future.

Experimental success achieved, environmentally friendly

Hydrogen energy is an excellent option as a green energy. Using it will not cause any damage to the environment. How to use it in vehicles. IIT experts are constantly doing research on this. Great success was achieved in the experiment.
