End of the first period: Oilers, Panthers tied 1-1

Lots of energy between the two teams, each scoring in the first seven minutes of the game. The Panthers were all over the Oilers in the final minutes of the first period, but couldn’t capitalize.

Florida has only one more shot than Edmonton, but is outshooting Edmonton 17-5 and winning puck battles in the Oilers zone.

First period – 4:16

The teams traded multiple chances in the final 10 minutes, with the shots going 6-5 in favor of Florida. Oilers defenseman Evan Bouchard hit the post with a slap shot from the point, almost giving Edmonton their first lead of the game.

And we’re off! Once again, chants of “Let’s Go Oilers” and “Let’s Go Panthers” collide.

Canadian singer and songwriter Alanis Morissette is the anthem singer for the evening. The Grammy Award-winning musician sang the Canadian National Anthem first, along with the Edmonton fans in attendance.

The pack drop is just minutes away. Florida fans cheer “let’s go Panthers”, but the sound of Edmonton fans shouting “let’s go Oilers” clashes with the home fans.

Only one lineup change between the two teams: Panthers forward Kyle Okposo will replace Nick Cousins in Florida’s bottom six forward group.

The 36-year-old played in the first five games of the series, but was a healthy scratch for the Panthers’ 5-1 loss to the Oilers on Friday. In 16 postseason games, Okposo has two assists.

Notes before the game

Connor McDavid and the Edmonton Oilers enter Monday night looking for history.

The Oilers, at one point down 3-0 to the Florida Panthers and looking dead in the water, managed to string together three wins and force a deciding Game 7, which, regardless of the outcome, will make history.

Stay tuned to CTVNews.ca for Game 7 updates throughout the night.

Edmonton is looking to become just the fifth team in NHL history to win a best-of-seven series after trailing 3-0, and the first since the 1942 Toronto Maple Leafs to do so in the Stanley Cup Final.

The 27-year-old McDavid was dominant throughout the Stanley Cup Finals, scoring three goals and eight assists for 11 points against the Panthers. He leads the postseason in assists (34) and points (42), becoming only the third player in NHL history to reach the 40-point mark in a single playoff season.

The other two were Wayne Gretzky and Mario Lemieux.

McDavid, who has already broken Gretzky’s record for assists in a single playoff season, is also five points away from tying the “Big One” record for most in a single postseason of 47, which he set in 1985.

Another Edmonton player made postseason history. Defenseman Evan Bouchard broke Oilers legend Paul Coffey’s record for most assists by a defenseman in a single playoff season, now with 26.

The 24-year-old Bouchard, in just his third full NHL season, also became the fourth defenseman in league history to record 30 points in a single postseason. The other three are Coffey, Brian Leach and Al McInnis.
