The Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina, will leave tomorrow for a two-day visit to India. She is coming here at the invitation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. According to a statement issued by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), Hasina will hold bilateral discussions with Prime Minister Modi during her visit. Apart from this, she is going to meet President Draupadi Murmu and Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar. Foreign Minister S Jaishankar is also scheduled to meet Hasina.
Hasina’s second visit to India in fifteen days
Earlier, Sheikh Hasina recently attended the swearing-in ceremony of Prime Minister Modi for the third consecutive term. He got a great welcome when he arrived in New Delhi. Besides Hasina, senior leaders of seven other countries and leaders of the Indian Ocean region also participated in the event. Congress Parliamentary Party chief Sonia Gandhi, party MP Rahul Gandhi and general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also met the Prime Minister of Bangladesh in New Delhi. Afterwards, Rahul Gandhi said, “We discussed many issues to further strengthen the India-Bangladesh relationship on the basis of trust, cooperation and commitment to mutual development.” Bangladesh is an important partner in India’s ‘neighbourhood first’ policy.
Trying to balance with China and India?
Hasina is also going to visit China in July. This is seen as an effort by Bangladesh to create a balance between the two countries. The Bangladesh Prime Minister’s official visit to India will be the first bilateral visit by a foreign politician hosted in India under the Modi 3.0 government. At the same time, Prime Minister Modi can also visit Bangladesh soon. However, the date of his visit has not yet been determined. It is believed that PM Modi may visit Bangladesh next month i.e. July.
