34 dead, 100 hospitalized after consuming liquor in Tamil Nadu Achi-News

GUWAHATI: A devastating incident in Tamil Nadu’s Kalakurichi district has left at least 34 people dead and around 100 more hospitalized after consuming liquor. Authorities fear the death toll could rise further as several patients remain in critical condition.

The tragedy occurred on Wednesday, June 19, and sent shock waves across the country. By Thursday, officials had arrested four people allegedly connected to the illegal liquor trade.

Many of the affected people are receiving emergency treatment in hospitals across Salem, Tiruvannamalai and Puducherry. In response to the crisis, the Prime Minister, MK Stalin, ordered a thorough investigation by the Criminal Investigation Department (CB-CID).

Furthermore, the government made immediate administrative changes. The district commissioner and superintendent of police of Kalakurichi have been transferred while nine police officers from the prohibition wing have been suspended.

The opposition AIADMK party took legal action, with its advocates filing a petition in the Madras High Court seeking urgent intervention. A division bench comprising Justices D. Krishnakumar and K. Kumarash Babu agreed to hear the petition on Friday.
