Saint Johnners can go once again to enjoy a cold drink or a fresh meal in the new market square patios, although not all seats are available.

The temporary patios reopened this weekend for the first time since being closed by the state fire marshal on June 6. Capacity was limited as the city was still waiting to test the fully integrated system.

City officials are hopeful that a grand opening will take place later this week.

State Fire Marshal Michael Lewis has declined several interview requests since the closure order was issued.

The patio first opened on June 1 and was shut down on June 6.

According to the city, a backup plan to have a 24/7 fire safety guard monitor was approved by the St. John’s Fire prevention office (which, according to the city, was acting on behalf of the state fire marshal’s office) during construction and a suppression system permanent fire continues.

Ultimately, the state fire marshal rejected the interim fire watch plan.

At this week’s city council meeting, city utilities and infrastructure commissioner Ian Fogan said additional parts of the outdoor patio’s permanent fire suppression system have become operational since the closure order, including its alarm and sprinkler components.

A statement earlier this week from the state fire marshal, issued through the Department of Public Safety, said occupancy of the newly constructed patio would be permitted once “construction is complete or completed significantly.”
