The first 3 meters of your shop from the front windows and door represent your title.

If you want to change your news agency and have people see your business as a change, change this space, dramatically, completely. Don’t leave anything as it was.

These are the first 3 meters that people will see and decide the type of store you have. This is where you can play against expectations, this is where you need to disrupt. Don’t give them what they expect.

Products, accessories – all are up for grabs in terms of the changes you bring.

If your counter is located in this space, it needs the same dramatic attention.

I think the best way to do this is one day when the shops are closed, take everything from the first 3 meters, remove it so you have a blank slate. Set a rule for yourself that you cannot return anything that was there to space. It will be difficult. You will have the urge to put one thing back into space, then another. Resist that urge.

What you really want from the experience is for customers to tell you that they are surprised to see that you stock something that you always have in stock but that they are only now noticing because of what you did in the first 3 feet of the store.

Here are four principles for executing the first 3 meters of your store:

  • Flip the mess and create a visual feast: As you place new products, keep the entryway clear of clutter. Make it visually appealing. Try and not use traditional retail equipment. Use clean lines, eye-catching displays and well-kept accessories.

  • Sensory experience: Consider incorporating subtle elements that engage other senses. Play upbeat music at the front of the store – people will know music, present wonderfully scented products, let people smell and enjoy your type of business.

  • Story through views: Don’t just present products, tell a story. Create thematic displays that show how your products can be used or benefit the customer. Do not include too many items in the display. Show less quantity but more variety of products – to tell the story you want.

  • Interactive elements: Make it easy for people to engage with what you sell, touch and smell. Products are presented in such an old school box. Remove products. Encourage touching and engaging.

The first 3 meters of the store is the most valuable retail real estate in the store if you use it well. Be responsible. Set the tone. Make a statement. Keep changing it. Show that your business is a changing business.
