Several ancient panchaloha idols and other artefacts, believed to belong to the Chola period, have been found in Koilrayanpettai village near Papanasam in Thanjavur district of Tamil Nadu. A 43-year-old resident, Mohammad Faizal, was digging a pit for the construction of his house when the historic discovery was made.
Mohammad Faizal was digging the third pit in his farm when he was surprised to find ancient idols buried underground. Immediately recognizing the potential importance of the discovery, officials were immediately notified.
Many items, artefacts are being pawned
When officials of the Department of Archeology rushed to the spot, several panchaloha idols, including those of Somaskandar, Chandrasekharar and Tirujnanasambandhar, and various artefacts used for worship, such as censers, trays and pedestals, were found.

Officers have seized the found idols and other items for safekeeping and further examination. Excavation work is currently underway to see if there are more historical artefacts buried in the area.
The idols and artefacts are believed to date back to the Chola period. It spans from the 9th to the 13th century AD and is known for its extraordinary artistic and architectural achievements.
