Reliance Jio can become the first telecom company in India to provide internet service via satellite. To this end, the company received permission to provide gigabit internet. Reliance Industries’ Jio platform has partnered with Europe’s Luxembourg-based SES for satellite internet service. This joint venture was named ‘Orbit Connect India’.

According to a Reuters news agency report, the joint venture has been granted permission from the Indian National Space Advancement and Certification Center (IN-SPACe) to operate satellites in India’s airspace. According to the report, Orbit Connect India received three types of approvals in April and June itself, but will require another approval from the country’s communications department to begin operations.

Inmarsat has also received approval for satellite internet service.
Orbit Connect India received these approvals from the Indian Space Authority at a time when companies such as Amazon.com and Elon Musk’s Starlink are competing for permission to operate satellite Internet services in India.

According to the report, IN-SPACE Chairman Pawan Goenka said that another company Inmarsat has received approval to operate a satellite in India to provide high-speed satellite-based internet service. At the same time, Elon Musk’s Starlink and Amazon’s Kuiper have also applied for approval.

Approval from IN-SPACE is also required for services.
Satcom service providers also require approval from the Autonomous Space Regulator, Indian Space Regulator India (IN-SPACe). The companies will then have to wait for spectrum allocation from DoT.

The government is awaiting recommendations from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) on how to allocate spectrum or radio frequencies for satellite services in the country. However, until TRAI finds a new chairman, recommendations are unlikely to come.

Starlink provides high speed internet even in remote areas
Starlink’s job is to connect remote areas with high-speed internet via satellite. In doing so, the company provides a kit that includes a router, a power supply, a cable and a tripod for assembly. For high-speed Internet, the dish is placed under the open sky. The Starlink app is available on iOS and Android, which takes care of everything from setup to monitoring.
