GUWAHATI: Members of the Congress Working Committee (CWC) on Saturday, June 8 passed a resolution that former party chief Rahul Gandhi should be appointed as the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha.

Reports quoted party general secretary and Rajya Sabha MP KC Venugopal as saying, "CWC unanimously asked Rahul Gandhi to take the post of Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha. He is the best person to lead this campaign within Parliament," Venugopal said.

"Rahul Gandhi said that he will take a decision on the matter very soon," he said.

This will be the first time that the Congress, since being ousted from power in 2014, will assume the post of Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha. She has not been able to get the position in the last ten years because her number was below the required 10 percent of the total seats in the House of Representatives, both in 2014 and 2019.

The party won 99 seats in the just-concluded Lok Sabha elections, making it eligible to claim the post.

Congress leader Ajay Rai said, "It was the wish of the CWC that Rahul Gandhi should become the LoP and be the voice of the common man and raise their issues in Parliament… We are working on why we got less seats in some states. Their claim of a ‘Congress yukata’ failed and the state again became a ‘Congress yukata’."

The CWC adopted two resolutions, one praising the role of Congress chief Malikarjun Kharge, Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra for the party’s performance in the Lok Sabha polls. It also credited Bharat Jodo Yatras led by Rahul Gandhi for its good performance.

The grand old party emerged as the second largest party in the Lok Sabha, improving its tally to 99 from 52 in the 2019 elections.

The NDA led by the Bharatiya Janata Party got 293 seats and they are set to form the government. This will be the first time the BJP will form a government without a majority in the lower house since it came to power in 2014.
