Ivan Fedotov’s contract in the Russian KHL has been terminated by CSKA Moscow, a move that could potentially pave the way for him to join the NHL’s Philadelphia Flyers.
PHILADELPHIA: Ivan Fedotov’s contract in the Russian KHL has been terminated by CSKA Moscow, a move that could potentially pave the way for him to join the NHL’s Philadelphia Flyers.
CSKA announced the sudden termination on Thursday with one year remaining, saying it retained its KHL rights and that “the club thanks Ivan Fedotov and wishes him the best of luck in his further career.”
Messages sent to Fedotov’s agent and Flyers general manager Danny Briere seeking comment were not immediately returned.
Fedotov, 27, is under contract with the Flyers this season after his initial contract, signed in May 2022, was lifted. He tried to come to North America in July 2022, but was instead taken by authorities to a remote military base in the Arctic Circle for a year of service.
Last summer, after completing that service, Fedotov signed a two-year contract with CSKA. He played for the team this past season, appearing in 49 games until March 8, when he was eliminated in the first round of the KHL Gagarin Cup playoffs.
Because Fedotov already had an NHL contract with the Flyers, the International Ice Hockey Federation ruled last summer in their favor and punished him and CSKA.
Fedotov was the first for the Russians at the Beijing 2022 Olympics when they reached the final and lost to Finland.
